Our Boards

Soft-tops, funboards & shortboards

We keep boards that match how most people actually surf Tamarindo — stable, fun and forgiving. Here's what we rent and who each one is for.

Soft-Top Boards

Best for beginners

Stable, easy to paddle, and soft when they hit you — which they will. The safest, most forgiving way to keep practicing after a lesson.

Funboards

Best for improvers

The natural next step once you're catching waves. Longer and more stable than a shortboard, but easier to turn than a longboard. The board that grows with you.

Shortboards

For experienced surfers

Know what you're doing and just didn't bring your board? Tell us what you ride and we'll set you up — or point you to the right shop if we don't have your exact shape.

Honest Advice

Not sure which board to rent?

Here's the advantage of renting from a surf school instead of a counter: we actually teach this, so we'll put you on the right board — not the most expensive one.

🌊 And because we surf this beach every day, we'll also tell you where and when to paddle out for your level — which matters as much as the board under your feet.

FAQ

Surfboard rental FAQs

How much does it cost to rent a surfboard in Tamarindo?

Rentals start at $X per day, with lower rates the longer you rent. A leash and wax are included, and lesson students get [X]% off for the rest of their trip. Prices in Tamarindo generally range from about $10 to $25 a day depending on the board and shop.

What surfboard should I rent as a beginner?

A soft-top longboard — every time. They're stable, easy to paddle and soft when you fall, which makes them the safest, most forgiving board to learn and practice on. We'll size it to you when you pick up.

Where can I rent a surfboard in Tamarindo?

Right on Tamarindo Beach from us — we're a surf school, so you pick up your board, paddle out, and drop it off at the same spot you surfed. No hauling a board across town. Message us on WhatsApp to reserve ahead, or just come find us.

Can I keep the surfboard overnight?

Yes — rent by the day and you can keep the board overnight at no extra charge. It's the move we recommend: the calmest, cleanest waves are often early morning, so having the board ready at dawn means you beat the crowds.

Do I need a deposit to rent a surfboard?

We ask for a small deposit or a photo of your ID while you have the board, returned when you bring it back in good shape. Quick and standard — we'd rather keep it simple so you can get in the water fast.

Can I rent a board for my kids?

Yes — we keep smaller soft-tops that are ideal and safe for kids. Tell us their age and size and we'll set them up with the right board. Soft-tops are the safest option since there's no hard fiberglass to bump into.

Do I need to take a lesson before renting?

Not at all — anyone can rent. But if you've never surfed, one lesson first will save you a frustrating day of paddling, and you'll get a discount on rentals afterward. That lesson-then-rent combo is the fastest, cheapest way to actually enjoy surfing on your trip.

What's the difference between a soft-top, funboard and shortboard?

A soft-top is a stable, foam-topped board best for beginners and kids. A funboard is a step up — still stable but easier to turn — ideal once you can stand up. A shortboard is for experienced surfers. We'll talk to you for a minute and point you to whichever fits your level, not the priciest one.

Can I rent a surfboard for a whole week?

Definitely — weekly rentals are the best value, since the per-day rate drops the longer you keep the board. If you're in Tamarindo for a week and plan to surf most days, a weekly rental works out much cheaper than day by day. Tell us your dates for the weekly rate.

Is Tamarindo a good place to surf on my own after renting?

For beginners and improvers, yes — the main beach break has a sandy bottom, warm water and gentle inside waves. That said, conditions and tides change daily, so when you rent from us we'll tell you the right spot and time for your level that day — free with your board.
