Short answer: yes — and it's the main reason Tamarindo has been a learn-to-surf destination for over 30 years.

You don't need to be young, athletic or a strong swimmer. You need to be comfortable standing in waist-deep water — we handle the rest.
Your board floats: it's the biggest flotation device on the beach. With an instructor beside you the whole time, the ocean feels a lot smaller than it looks from shore.

Frequently asked questions
Which surf lesson should I choose — private, semi-private or group?
It depends on how you like to learn and who you're with. Go private if you're nervous, short on time or want the fastest progress. Go semi-private if you're a couple or two friends who want to learn together but still get personal corrections. Go group if you're solo or on a budget and like a social vibe — our groups stay capped at 4 students per instructor. First-timers who want to be sure they stand up are happiest with private or semi-private.
How long is a lesson, and how much of it is in the water?
About 90 minutes. The first 15–20 minutes are on the sand — a safety briefing and pop-up practice — and the rest is in the water actually surfing. We keep the beach part short on purpose: you came to Tamarindo to surf, not to sit through a lecture.
Can my partner and I take a lesson together if we're at different levels?
Absolutely — that's exactly what our semi-private lessons are built for. Your instructor splits attention and adjusts to each person, so a total beginner and someone who's surfed before can share the same lesson without either being held back or rushed.
What happens if I don't catch a wave during my lesson?
It almost never happens — most students stand up and ride during their first lesson, because we time your session to the calmest part of the day and the instructor pushes you into the right waves. And if you don't stand up in your first lesson, your next one is on us.
How many people are in a group lesson?
We cap group lessons at 4 students per instructor — deliberately small. A lot of cheaper lessons on the beach put 6–10 beginners with one instructor, so you spend most of the time waiting your turn. A small ratio means your instructor can actually watch you, push you into waves and correct you.
Can I book a lesson for the same day or last minute?
Often yes — if you're already in Tamarindo and there's space in a good tide window, message us on WhatsApp and we'll get you in, sometimes the same day. In high season (December–April) the best slots fill up, so booking 1–2 days ahead is safer.
I already know the basics — can I take a lesson to improve?
Yes. Not every lesson is for absolute beginners — we also coach people who can stand up but want to paddle better, read waves or start turning. A private lesson is usually the best fit, so the instructor can focus entirely on what is holding you back.
Do you offer packages or discounts for multiple lessons?
Yes — if you're here for several days, multi-lesson packages work out cheaper per lesson and get you surfing on your own faster. Most people need 3–5 lessons to pop up independently, so a 3-lesson package is the sweet spot for a week-long trip.
What's the difference between a surf lesson and a surf camp?
A lesson is a single ~90-minute session — you show up, surf, and you're done. A surf camp is a multi-day package bundling several lessons together, often with extras. If you just want to try surfing or fit a session into a busy trip, book a lesson; to seriously learn over several days, a package is better value.
Can the whole family take a lesson together?
Yes — family lessons are one of our most-booked formats. We teach kids from age 6, and parents can be in the same lesson. Kids learn in shallow, sandy-bottom water with an instructor within arm reach. Just be ready for your kids to stand up before you do.
